Sofiia Melehanych is a Ukrainian visual artist currently based in Vancouver, Canada. In her work, she explores spaces of both individual and collective states of loss. Sofiia uncovers processes of built-up grief, passive and active violence, examining the physicality of this experience through the perspective of womanhood. In Sofiia’s practice, her relationship with God during the days of war shapes her understanding of intimacy, pain, and human connection. The centered mediums of her work are mixed media as well as poetry, video art, photography, and painting. All of these elements interweave within her work, forming a unique visual experience that exists in a state of feeling, of sensation, that we all are trying to hide within ourselves.
